Bacon’s Rebellion

Uprising in colonial virginia in 1676 led by Nathaniel bacon and his followers.

  • Caused by land disputes with natives, and economic distress 

  • Pushed for African slavery, as rebellion involved many former indentured servants

Eventually suppressed by Berkeley

A colonial land grant system where those who sponsored the passage of new settlers were granted large sums of land. This attracted more settlers to the colonies.9

Calvert Proprietors

Original founders of Maryland, as they were Catholics who felt oppressed by the Church of England. They promised religious toleration in their colony.

A social agreement written by the Puritans that laid out basic principles and the foundation of what their colony would be. It was signed in November of 1620.

John Winthrop

An educated gentlemen who commanded a Puritan expedition which sailed for New England. He believed that the Puritans were founding a Holy commonwealth, or “city upon a hill”

Roger Williams

A puritan descendent who wanted them to separate from the Church of England, leading to him being banished and taking refuge which the natives. He later founded providence and what eventually became Rhode Island
