Dermis
underlying dense connective tissue containing blood supply, nerve endings, sweat glands, and hair follicles
Subcutaneous/Hypodermis
loose connective tissue deepest layer consisting of adipose(fat) storage connecting skin to the muscle underneath
Keratin
protien that makes the skin waterproof and strong and is found in the hair and nails
Melanin
located in the dermis and produce skin and hair pigmentation
Melanocyte
a cell in skin and eyes that produces melanin
Skin Cancer (ABCDE)
Asymmetry
Border
Color
Diameter
Evolving
Basal Cell Carcinoma
least malignant and most common occurs in the basal cell
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
common cancer of the squamous cells found in the epidermis
Melanoma
most dangerous skin cancer is fast evolving
Hair follicle
organs that form hair are located deep in the dermis, produce nonliving hairs, wrapped in dense CT sheath, the base is surrounded by sensory nerves, and controls bacteria
Hair shaft
portion of hair above the skin
Arrector pili muscle
involuntary smooth muscle causes hair to stand up which produces ¨goose bumps¨
Ecrine sweat gland
produce sweat found in armpit and anogenital area
Sebaceous gland
oil glands
Alopecia
male patterned baldness that is passed down hereditary from mothers side
Cerumenous gland
produces cerumen (ear wax)
Dilation
Constriction
Mammary Glands
specialized sweat glands that secrete milk
Acne
inflammation and infection of sebaceous glands
Receptors-
Pacinian corpuscle
cell deep in the dermis that is capable of detecting pressure
Meissners corpuscle
sensitive touch receptors in the dermis that respond to light touch and vibration
Ruffini
in the lower dermis and are heat receptors
Merkel discs
upper dermis light touch receptors
Free Nerve endings
pain receptors located in the dermis
Krause bulbs
cold receptors in the mid dermis
