Rebellion which began with refusal to pay the whiskey tax, but eventually escalated into violence towards tax collectors. In 1794, a mob destroyed a tax inspector’s house, which led to military intervention. George Washington and a militia of 12,000 men ended the rebellion. It demonstrated the power of the new system of government.
