Compromise which created the National Bank, but moved the capitol to the south.
Compromise of 1790
Federal excise tax on distilled spirits. Caused anger among farmers, because they required the spirits to preserve and transport their crops more easily.
Whiskey Tax of 1791
Rebellion which began with refusal to pay the whiskey tax, but eventually escalated into violence towards tax collectors. In 1794, a mob destroyed a tax inspector’s house, which led to military intervention. George Washington and a militia of 12,000 men ended the rebellion. It demonstrated the power of the new system of government.
Whiskey Rebellion (1791 - 1794)
Conflict of territory fought against a confederation of native tribes. Brief battle resulting in an American victory. Opened the northwest territory for settlement, increasing tension with natives.
Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794)
Treaty which ceded modern day Ohio and part of Indiana to the Americans. It created a treaty line where natives were allowed to hunt and plant. Americans said they would grant annual annuities and provide various goods to the tribes.
Treaty of Greenville (1795)
Highly controversial treaty between the United States and Great Britain which resolved issues from the American Revolution. It negotiated peace and prevented conflict between the British troops in the American Northwest.
Jay’s Treaty (1794)
Address which implored Americans to prevent involvement with European matters, not form permanent alliances, avoid sectionalism, and not form political parties.
Washington’s Farewell Address (1796)
Act which made it more difficult to become a citizen, allowing President Adams to deport “dangerous” foreigners more easily. Additionally, it made it a crime to speak against the government.
Alien and Sedition Act (1798)
Jefferson’s response to the Alien and Sedition Acts. He argued the government overstepped its constitutional authority. It asserted that states were permitted to determine the constitutionality of federal laws and null them within their territories.
Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (1799)
Event where American Diplomats spoke to 3 French agents labeled X, Y, and Z. They demanded a bribe to begin negotiations and stop seizing American ships. The American Diplomats refused.
XYZ Affair (1797 - 1798)
Naval conflict between the United States and France. It stemmed from the XYZ Affair; the French began seizing American ships and violating American Maritime trade laws. It ended with the Convention of 1800, which formally ended the conflict.

Controversial purchase of land performed by Jefferson. It went against his policy of reducing national debt due to the high price ($15 Million), however it was beneficial for the nation.
Louisiana Purchase of 1803
Act under Jefferson which eliminated all foreign trade, creating significant economic problems in New England. It was repealed in 1809.
