Aqueous Solution
A solution in which water is the solvent and one or more substances (solutes) are dissolved.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved in a solvent, often present in a smaller quantity.
Solvent
The substance that dissolves a solute; in aqueous solutions, it is typically water.
Complete Ionic Equation
An equation that shows all of the particles in a solution as they actually exist, including ions.
Spectator Ion
Ions that do not participate in a chemical reaction and are not included in the net ionic equation.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that includes only the particles that participate in the reaction, excluding spectator ions.
Dissociation
The process in which ionic compounds separate into their constituent ions when dissolved in water.
Precipitate
A solid that forms and settles out of a liquid mixture during a chemical reaction.
Double-Replacement Reaction
A reaction in which two compounds exchange ions or bonds to form different compounds.
Acid
A substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
Molecular Compounds
Compounds that consist of molecules, which may exist as intact molecules in solution or ionize when dissolved.
Gas Formation
The production of a gas as a result of a chemical reaction, often observed in aqueous solutions.
