Power-Off 180 Accuracy Approach & Landing (C152)
Setup / Entry
Abeam touchdown point → Carb heat on, Power idle
Airspeed: 60 KIAS (VG)
Clean until you need flaps per your normal landing technique
Maneuver
Turn base early or late depending on wind
Maintain 60 KIAS to final
Slips allowed
Adjust pattern shape to ensure you’ll reach the point
Recovery / Completion
Touch down +200 ft / 0 ft of point
Normal landing flare
ACS Notes
Stabilized, safe approach
No more than 200 ft long, no undershoot
Proper energy management expected
Steep Spiral
Setup / Entry
At least enough altitude for 3 full turns; must exit ≥ 1500 AGL
Carb heat on, Power idle
Airspeed: 60 KIAS (best glide)
Maneuver
Maintain constant radius around reference point
Bank up to ~50°, steeper on downwind, shallower on upwind
Clear engine periodically (quick power bumps)
Maintain VG throughout
Recovery
Roll out to the assigned heading ±10°
level off, add power, return to cruise
ACS Notes
Maintain airspeed ±10 KIAS
Avoid excessive bank (>60°)
Wind correction required
Chandelle
Setup / Entry
Altitude allowing maneuver to stay ≥ 1500 AGL
Airspeed ~95 KIAS
Clean configuration
Roll into 30° bank add full power
Maneuver
First 90°:
• Hold 30° bank
• Smoothly raise pitch to 15–17° nose-up
Second 90°:
• Keep pitch constant
• Shallow bank to wings-level at 180° point
Recovery / Completion
End at 180° heading, wings level
Nose high, minimum controllable airspeed, no altitude loss
ACS Notes
Final heading ±10°
Just above stall, no descending
Smooth coordination required
Lazy Eights
Setup / Entry
Entry altitude high enough to remain ≥ 1500 AGL
Airspeed ~95 KIAS (cruise)
Clean configuration
Maneuver
Each 180° turn follows the pattern:
45° point: Max pitch up, ~15° bank
90° point: Level pitch, max bank (~30°)
135° point: Maximum pitch down, ~15° bank
180° point: Wings level, entry altitude & airspeed recovered
Recovery
Repeat opposite direction
Smooth transitions, no abrupt inputs
ACS Notes
Altitude at 180° ±100 ft
Airspeed ±10 knots
Heading ±10°
Bank max ~30°
Eights on Pylons
Setup / Entry
Pivotal altitude
Airspeed ~95 KIAS
Select two pylons perpendicular to wind
Clean configuration
Maneuver
Maintain line-of-sight pivot on pylon:
• Pylon moves aft → Pitch up
• Pylon moves forward → Pitch down
Bank as needed (usually 20°–40°)
Maintain pivotal altitude precisely
Recovery
Roll out at 45° line toward second pylon
Perform second circle in opposite direction
Exit wings level at entry altitude and airspeed
ACS Notes
Maintain pivotal altitude ±100 ft
Maintain airspeed ±10 KIAS
Proper pitch–bank coordination required
Accelerated Stall
Setup / Entry
Entry altitude allowing recovery ≥ 3000 AGL
Airspeed ~70 KIAS
Clean configuration
Apply 45° bank while increasing load factor
Maneuver
Power either:
• Power-off version: 1500 RPM → Idle
• Power-on version: Climb power
Increase back pressure to induce stall
Recognize buffet / stall horn
Recovery
Reduce AOA immediately
Level wings
Full power
Establish climb (use VY)
Return to entry heading/altitude
ACS Notes
No secondary stall
Maintain coordination
Smooth recovery, minimal altitude loss
