Traits
Qualities that distinguish us from other people, but are also shared with others.
Sanguine Personality
Associated with too much blood; vigorous and athletic people.
Choleric Personality
Associated with too much yellow bile; easily angered.
Melancholic Personality
Associated with too much black bile; sad and depressed.
Phlegmatic Personality
Associated with too much phlegm; lazy.
Phrenology
The study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities.
Endomorph
Overweight body type; sociable, jolly, and loves food.
Mesomorph
Athletic body type; aggressive.
Ectomorph
Skinny body type; introverted and studious.
Big Five Super Traits
Five broad trait dimensions used to reduce personality: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (OCEAN).
Openness to Experience
Receptive to new ideas, experiences, and trying different things; loves the arts.
Conscientiousness
Careful, dutiful, dependable, and good at work.
Extraversion
Outgoing, assertive, and dominant.
Agreeableness
Nice, trusting, and assumes the best of people.
Neuroticism
Prone to negative emotions and has a hard time regulating those emotions
Social Darwinism
Misinterpretation of Darwin's theory as survival of the fittest, leading to eugenics.
Eugenics
Pseudoscience of bettering human stock through selective reproduction.
Set Like Plaster Hypothesis
Personality is completely fixed by age 30 and does not change.
Epigenetics
The study of how genes turn on and off based on events encountered throughout the lifespan.
MAOA (Warrior Gene)
A gene associated with aggression, particularly when combined with an abusive childhood.
