Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up itself.
Enzyme
An enzyme is a biological catalyst that speeds up specific chemical reactions in living organisms without being used up.
Substrate
The molecule that the enzyme binds to and chemically changes.
Active Site
The specific "pocket" on the enzyme where the substrate fits.
Lock-and-Key Mechanism
A model showing that only one specific substrate fits into one specific enzyme.
Specific
Enzymes only work with one particular type of substrate.
Denature
When an enzyme’s shape changes so much that it stops working.
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold it is, which affects how fast enzymes work.

A measure of how acidic or alkaline (basic) a liquid is.
