Psychosocial Development

Development occurs as a result of a person's experiences and interactions with society.

Trust vs. Mistrust

First stage of Erikson's theory occurring in infancy, where trust is developed when basic needs are met.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Second stage occurring in early childhood that involves developing a sense of independence.

Initiative vs. Guilt

Third stage in early childhood where taking initiative matters, but can lead to guilt if boundaries are overstepped.

Industry vs. Inferiority

Fourth stage in middle childhood where competence in abilities is developed.

Identity vs. Role Confusion

Fifth stage during adolescence focusing on experimenting with and developing personal identity.

Intimacy vs. Isolation

Sixth stage in early adulthood emphasizing the establishment of intimate relationships.

Generativity vs. Stagnation

Seventh stage in middle adulthood reflecting contributions to society and personal accomplishments.

Integrity vs. Despair

Eighth stage in late adulthood where individuals reflect on their life and either feel integrity or despair.

Characteristics derived from successful resolution of psychosocial crises that support positive development.

Adaptive Response

Responses that help acquire strengths and virtues needed for future development stages.

Maladaptive Response

Responses that hinder adaptation and resolution of conflicts in later life stages.
