What does the mammalian nervous system consist of?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Describe the Central Nervous System (CNS)
It consists of the brain and spinal cord, which are the areas of coordination
What is the role of the nervous system?
Coordination and regulation of body functions
Describe the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Comprises of nerves and neurones that coordinate and regulate body functions
Where do electrical impulses travel
Electrical impulses travel through the neurones
What is a neurone?
A neurone is a specialised nerve cell that is adapted to transmit nerve impulses around the body.
Nerve Impulse
An electrical signal that passes along the nerve cells called neurones
Axons
Long nerve fibres of a neurone that carry nerve impulses away from the cell body
Dendrites
Dendrites are short extensions of a neurone that carry nerve impulses towards the cell body.

Identify this neurone and its function
Sensory Neurone. It carries impulses from the sense organs (sensory receptors) to the CNS
