What four factors affect the rate of reaction?
Temperature, concentration (or pressure), surface area, and the presence of a catalyst.
How does increasing temperature affect the rate of reaction?
When the temperature is increased, particles move faster, resulting in more frequent and energetic collisions.
How does increasing concentration or pressure affect the rate of reaction?
A higher concentration (or pressure) means more particles in the same volume, leading to more frequent collisions and an increased reaction rate.
How does increasing the surface area of a solid reactant affect the rate of reaction?
Breaking a solid reactant into smaller pieces increases its surface area to volume ratio, resulting in more collisions and a higher reaction rate.
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
The rate at which reactants are changed into products.
How can you find the speed of a reaction?
By recording the amount of product formed or the amount of reactant used up over time.
According to collision theory, what two things does the rate of a chemical reaction depend on?
Collision frequency and the energy transferred during a collision.
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy that particles need to react.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the rate of a reaction without being chemically changed or used up.
How do catalysts work?
By decreasing the activation energy needed for a reaction to occur.
