Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Highly keratinized tissue that covers the dorsal surface of the feline tongue.
Filiform papilla
Pointed structures on the dorsal surface of the feline tongue.
Taste buds
Structures in the surface epithelium of the fungiform papilla that are responsible for taste.
Vallate papilla
Large circular papillae with a flattened surface and surrounded by a deep circular groove.
Serous gland
Glands found near vallate papillae that secrete into the surrounding groove.
Mucous gland
Glands found near vallate papillae that secrete directly to the lingual surface.
Taste pore
A small aperture which provides access for chemicals to the taste receptor cells.
Enamel organ
The proliferation of oral epithelium into the underlying mesenchyme during tooth development.
Dental papilla
The mass of mesenchyme caught inside the enamel organ.
Ameloblasts
Cells differentiated from the inner enamel epithelium that lay down a thin layer of enamel.
Odontoblasts
Columnar cells of the dental papilla adjacent to the ameloblasts that lay down a layer of dentin.
Predentin
Unmineralized dentin.
Tunica mucosa, Tunica submucosa, Tunica muscularis, Tunica fibrosa/serosa
The four layers of the wall of the esophagus.
Lamina propria
The layer of connective tissue beneath the stratified squamous epithelium in the tunica mucosa.
Muscularis mucosae
The outer layer of the mucosa composed of longitudinally arranged bundles of smooth muscle.
Myenteric ganglion-plexus
Ganglion plexus found between the inner circular and outer longitudinal layers of the tunica muscularis
Esophageal gland
Mucous glands found in the submucosa of the canine esophagus.
Crop
A diverticulum of the esophagus.
