Pulmonary Circulation
The process where the right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs for oxygenation.
Systemic Circulation
The process where the left side of the heart pumps blood to all body tissues.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
Respiratory Membrane
The structure in the lungs where gas exchange between the air and blood takes place, composed of pneumocytes and endothelial cells of capillaries.
Dalton's Law
The total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is the sum of the partial pressures of each individual gas.
Partial Pressure
The pressure exerted by an individual gas in a mixture of gases.
Henry's Law
The amount of gas in solution is directly proportional to its pressure.
Gas exchange in the lungs
The process where oxygen moves from the lungs into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs.
Gas exchange in the tissues
The process where oxygen moves from the blood into the tissues, and carbon dioxide moves from the tissues into the blood.
External Respiration
Gas exchange between the lungs and the blood.
Internal Respiration
Gas exchange between the blood and the tissues.
