[Epi] Class

Sympathomimetic

[Epi] Action

Increase SBP due to increased CO2 and vasoconstriction (alpha). Causes bronchodilations and antagonizes the effects of histamine. 

[Epi] Indications

Patient exhibits signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), including either respiratory distress or shock (hypoperfusion) with wheezing. 

[Epi] Contraindications

Hypovolemic shock, SBP lower than 90, tachydysrhythmias, HOWEVER none in life threatening anaphylaxis. 

[Epi] Onset/Duration

Onset: 6-12 minutes 

Duration: 1-4 hours 

[Epi] Dose/Route

Adult: One adult auto-injector (0.3 mg) SQ/IM (Subcutaneous/intramuscular) 

Ped: One infant/child auto-injector (0.15 mg) SQ/IM (Subcutaneous/intramuscular) 

[Epi] Side Effects

1. Increased heart rate (tachycardia) 

2. Hypertension 

3. Cardiac dysrhythmias 

4. Pallor (Paleness) 

5. Tremors 

6. Dyspnea 

7. Paradoxical bronchospasms 

8. Dizziness 

9. Chest pain 

10. Headache 

11. Nausea 

12. Vomiting 

13. Excitability, anxiety
