MyPlate
A tool published by the USDA to help people choose the right amount of each food group in their diet.
Nutrient-dense diet
A diet low in calories but high in nutrients, including a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy.
Moderate aerobic activity
Physical activity that raises your heart rate and breathing, such as brisk walking, and should be performed for at least 150 minutes a week.
Vigorous aerobic activity
High-intensity physical activity, such as running, recommended at a minimum of 75 minutes per week.
Saturated fats
Fats that should be limited to under 10% of daily calories to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Trans fats
Unhealthy fats that should be avoided entirely in a diet.
Caloric deficit
A reduction in daily calorie intake; to lose 1 pound, one must consume 500 fewer calories each day.
Alcohol consumption guidelines
Recommended limits of one drink per day for women and two for men.
Weight loss support groups
Organizations that provide social support for individuals looking to lose weight.
Muscle-strengthening activities
Physical exercises, like weightlifting, that should be done at least two days a week to improve health.
