matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
Solod
Matter in a fixed shape and volume, with particles tightly packed together.
Liquid
Matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Its particles are close together but can flow freely.
Gas
Matter that has no definite shape or volume, with particles that are far apart and move freely.
Phase change
The process of matter transitioning from one state (solid, liquid, or gas) to another due to changes in temperature or pressure.
melting/freezing point
The temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid (melting) or a liquid turns into a solid (freezing).
boiling/condensing point
The temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas (boiling) or a gas turns into a liquid (condensing).
kinetic theory of matter
all matter consist of tiny particles in constant, random motion
Heating curve
A diagram of temperature versus amount of energy added over time
A substance has atoms that are orderly and close together. What state of matter is this?
Solid
A substance has atoms that are somewhat close together and somewhat organized. What state of matter is this?
Liquid
A substance has atoms that are far apart and very unorganized. What state of matter is this?
Gas
