What is genotype x environment interaction (GEI)?
A situation where different genotypes respond differently in different environments
When is there no GEI?
IF G and E act independently
How is GEI different from correlation between genotype and environment (rGE)?
Because rGE refers to non-random association between certain genotypes and environment
Not because of the genotype’s performance but because of how the environment is assigned
EX: high producing cows receive more feed
What are the 2 effects when GEI is present
Scaling Effect
Ranking of genotypes stays the same across environments
BUT performance differences differ depending on the environment
Re-Ranking of Genotypes
Genotypes perform differently in each environment that the ranking changes
How to reduce the negative effects of GEI? (animals perform very differently in different environments)
Breeders can crossbred because crossbred/hybrids tend to be more robust and show heterosis (hybrid vigour)
So they have greater adaptability to a variety of environments
