Exothermic Reaction
a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat.
Temp goes up
Loose energy——Vibrate less——atoms stay close together
Endothermic Reaction
a process or reaction in which the system absorbs energy from its surroundings
Temp goes down
Gains energy——Vibrates more——atoms get further apart, bonds might even break
Examples endothermic reactions
cooking an egg, baking bread, photosynthesis, water evaporation, dissolving salt in water
evaporation
melting
boiling
Examples of exothermic reactions
water and acid reaction, campfire, rusting, nuclear fission, freezing water into ice
condensation
freezing
Exothermic (reactant product)
reactant energy=high
product energy=low
Endothermic (reactant product)
Reactant=low energy
Product=high energy
what must happen for bonds to break
energy must be absored
Enthalpy
a measure of an increase or decrease of energy in a chemical reaction
Entropy
a measure of much atoms in a substance are free to spread around
measurement of disorder or randomness of energy in a system
Solids entropy
low entropy, energy is low and atoms are not moving much
Gas entropy
high entropy, high energy, atoms are moving around
finish the sentence
During a chemical reaction
bonds in the reactants break while new bonds are formed form in the product
