Parenteral Injection
Administration of a medication by injection into tissues or the circulatory system.
Intradermal Injection
Injection into the dermis, just below the epidermis with the longest absorption time.
Intramuscular Injection
Injection into a muscle, typically using a 90° angle.
Subcutaneous Injection
Injection into the adipose tissue below the dermis, typically at a 45° angle.
Insulin Administration
Use of insulin pens and the importance of a 2 RN check, including priming the needle.
Heparin/Enoxaparin
A high-risk medication often used for anticoagulation, monitored closely, especially for IV flushing.
Ventrogluteal Site
Injection site for intramuscular medication; involves positioning the client and landmarks for locating the site.
Aspirate for Blood
A procedure where the clinician checks for blood return after injection, except when administering vaccines.
Z-track Method
A technique used for intramuscular injections to minimize tissue irritation.
