Healthcare as a Privilege
The idea that access to medical care is a deserved advantage for those who can afford it.
Healthcare as a Right
The idea that basic medical care should be available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.
Private Care Model
A system where individuals are personally responsible for paying the actual cost of their care, often through health insurance.
Socialized Care Model
A system where the government collects taxes to provide medical care to citizens, assuming a large role in determining what care is provided and when.
Deductible
The amount you must pay annually for medical care before your health insurance plan starts to pay.
Premium
The cost of your health insurance plan, typically paid monthly, regardless of whether you use the insurance.
Co-pay
A fixed amount you pay for each instance of medical care (e.g., doctor's visit) when that care is covered by your plan and your deductible has been met.
Co-insurance
The portion of costs you must pay for each instance of medical care when that care is covered by your plan and your annual deductible has been paid.
Out-of-pocket Costs
Costs for services not covered by your health insurance policy, such as out-of-network care.
HDP (High-Deductible Plan)
A health insurance plan with a high deductible, often coupled with a health savings account.
