Chemical Reactions
Processes where substances transform into different substances by breaking and forming chemical bonds.
Reactants
Substances that undergo chemical changes in a reaction, found on the left side of a chemical equation.
Products
New substances formed as a result of a chemical reaction, found on the right side of a chemical equation.
Coefficients
Numbers placed before compounds in a chemical equation to indicate the number of molecules or atoms involved.
Balancing Equations
The process of ensuring that the same number of each type of atom appears on both sides of a chemical equation.
Combustion Reaction
A chemical reaction that typically involves a fuel and oxygen, producing carbon dioxide and water.
Dissociation
The process in which an ionic compound separates into its individual ions in an aqueous solution.
Spectator Ions
Ions in a solution that do not participate in a chemical reaction and remain unchanged.
Solubility Rules
Guidelines that predict whether an ionic compound will be soluble or insoluble in water.
Redox Reactions
Reactions that involve the transfer of electrons between species, leading to changes in oxidation states.
Combination Reaction
A type of reaction where two or more reactants combine to form a single product.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction where a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds.
Single Replacement Reaction
A reaction where one element replaces another element in a compound.
Double Replacement Reaction
A reaction where two compounds exchange ions to form two new compounds.
Driving Forces
Factors that drive reactions, including the formation of gases, solids, or the transfer of electrons.
Aqueous Solution
A solution in which water is the solvent.
Oxidation
The process of losing electrons during a chemical reaction.
Reduction
The process of gaining electrons during a chemical reaction.
Activity Series
A list of metals arranged in order of decreasing reactivity.
