Pure substance

Matter that has a fixed composition and distinct properties

ie Iron (Fe)

Physical property

Characteristic that can be measured and observed without changing the sample’s composition.

ie color

Extensive physical property

Physical properties that are dependent upon the amount of substance present.

ie mass, volume, size, weight, length

Intensive physical property

Physical property that remains the same no matter how much of a substance is present.

ie density, boiling points, color, temperature, luster, hardness

Chemical property

Ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances. The inability to change can also count.
