Electron cloud
Region around the nucleus where electrons are most likely to be found.
Energy level
A fixed distance from the nucleus where electrons reside; also called a shell.
Principal energy level (n)
The quantum number that designates an electron’s energy level; larger n means electrons are farther from the nucleus.
Maximum electrons per energy level
2n^2 electrons can occupy energy level n.
Sublevel
Subdivision of an energy level into s, p, d, and f sublevels.
S sublevel
First sublevel; spherical shape; holds up to 2 electrons.
P sublevel
Second sublevel; contains 3 orbitals; holds up to 6 electrons.
D sublevel
Third sublevel; contains 5 orbitals; holds up to 10 electrons.
F sublevel
Fourth sublevel; contains 7 orbitals; holds up to 14 electrons.
Orbitals
Regions within a sublevel where electrons are located; each orbital can hold 2 electrons.
Max electrons in s sublevel
2 electrons.
Max electrons in p sublevel
6 electrons.
Max electrons in d sublevel
10 electrons.
Max electrons in f sublevel
14 electrons.
Orbitals in s sublevel
1 orbital.
Orbitals in p sublevel
3 orbitals.

Sublevel order within a level
The order of filling within a level is s, then p, then d, then f.
Number of sublevels in energy level n
There are n sublevels in energy level n, up to a maximum of 4 (S, P, D, F).
n=1 sublevel
Has 1 sublevel: S.
n=2 sublevels
Has 2 sublevels: S and P.
n=3 sublevels
Has 3 sublevels: S, P, D.
n=4 sublevels
Has 4 sublevels: S, P, D, F.
