Supreme Court was much more active in upholding the policies of the federal government which supported the Native Americans, and played a crucial role in the return of many of their former lands

The policies pursued by the federal government met some resistance, as the Native Americans were determined not to be assimilated and abandon their customs or way of life
how did some of the resistance manifest at the start of the period? what were there also challenges against to gov?
Although some of the resistance manifested itself in outbreaks of violence, particularly at the start of the period, there were also challenges to gov policy in courts
what happened in 1902 with the Cherokees?
the Cherokees challenged Congress’ right to deny them rights to live accordingly to their own laws
what happened in the 1903 case?
Lone Wolf, a Kiowa Chief, who along with the Commanches had signed a treaty with the government in 1867, challenged the government’s right to ignore the treaty and all treaties and therefore allowed the government to take away even more land from the NAs, overturning earlier court decisions that had been supportive of their rights.
