What is place ?
A place is a space that is given meaning(s) by an individual r a group of people, it is more than just the physical location.
What is the tripartite model of place ?
Cresswell
3 categories:
1)Location: where the place is (map, coastline etc)
2)Locale: the way the place is physically shaped by people (roads)
3)Sense of place: emotional and subjective attachment to the place through lived experience
What is a lived experience ?
A person’s first hand experience of living in a particular place, made up of their thoughts, feelings and opinion.
Theoretical approach to place 1:
Descriptive ?
Describing the physical and human features of a place.
Theoretical approach to place 2:
Social constructionist:
Places are the product of social processes occurring at that place at a particular time, e.g. football stadium.
Theoretical approach to place 3:
Phenomenological:
Places are different for everyone because we all experience them differently.
Mini case study:
Trafalgar square in London.
Place has different lived experiences, people have different sense of place, feeling of historical oppression. It is also social constructionist, it is different at times of holiday, protest or daily tourism.
