Trigeminal nerve
CN V
Formed by ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular
Ganglion
Clustering of cell bodies outside of CNS
Nucleus
Clustering of cell bodies inside CNS
Trigeminal ganglion
Branches of CNV enter
Relay station that connects to brainstem
Ophthalmic branch (V1)
Runs along lateral wall of cavernous sinus and enters orbit through superior orbital fissure
Receives sensory info from oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens
Ophthalmic branch divisions
Nasociliary, Frontal, Lacrimal nerves
Nasociliary nerve
Passes through oculomotor foramen and runs medially
Branches into long/short ciliary nerves, anterior/posterior ethmoid nerve, infratrochlear nerve
Rule of thumb for traveling through oculomotor foramen
Destination is within muscle cone → Pass through
Destination not within muscle cone → Pass above or below
Long ciliary nerves
Penetrate sclera at posterior apertures (same as long post ciliary arteries)
Receives sensory information from anterior half of globe
Short ciliary nerves
Pass through ciliary ganglion through the sensory root
Branch into choroid, posterior sclera, iris, CB, cornea
Mixed nerves (carry different types of nerve fibers)
Ciliary ganglion
Within muscle cone, contains 3 roots (sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic)
Only parasympathetic fibers will synapse
Anterior ethmoid nerve
Anterior and middle ethmoid sinus
Posterior ethmoid nerve
Posterior ethmoid and sphenoid sinus
Infratrochlear nerve
Runs near medial rectus below the trochlea and superior oblique
Branches to structures in medial canthal region
Frontal nerve
Passes through superior orbital fissure above Annulus of Zinn
Divides into supraorbital and supratrochlear nerves
Supraorbital nerve
Pass through supraorbital notch
Branch to structures in superior middle lid
Supratrochlear nerve
Above the trochlea
Branches to superior medial canthal region
Lacrimal nerve
Passes through superior orbital fissure and above Annulus of Zinn
Receives sensory info from superior lateral lid
Maxillary nerve
Pass through foramen rotundum above pterygopalatine fossa
Divides into infraorbital and zygomatic
Infraorbital nerve
Pass through inferior orbital fissure and infraorbital groove
Branches to inferior lid
Zygomatic nerve
Travels through inferior orbital fissure and exits through zygomatic foramen
Divides into zygomaticotemporal and zygomaticofacial
Branches to inferior lateral lid
