• God promised Abraham that he and his descendants will become a great nation

• Promised Abraham the land of Israel

• The spiritual covenant was sealed by a physical covenant of circumcision- brit mullah

• Covanent sealed by the giving of Torah in mountain

10 commandments

• First 5 regulate behaviour between human kind and God

• Second five represents conduct between people how humans should relate to each other

613 mitzvot

Contains- posotive commandments aswell as negative commandments

The tanakh and nevi’im

• A scared Jewish text which is the collection of Torah, nevim and ketuvim

• nevim consists of eight books that trace Jewish history and say more about laws eaxh named after the prophets

Talmud

• Records of conversations between ancient Jewish rabbis about laws, ethics and everyday life

• It helps Jews understand how to follow and live by the Torah
