Confirmation
A sacrament of initiation that completes and strengthens the grace given by the holy spirit in baptism.
Sacrament of Fullness
It indicates that the Christian had reached the fullness of the graces of Baptism and has received the imprint or seal of the Holy Spirit.
Rite of Confirmation
The minister prays for the seven gifts of the holy spirit to grow in the candidates.
Messiah
The word messiah (Christ in Greek) means 'the Anointed One.'
Day of Pentecost
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit promised to the Apostles by Christ, which empowered them to preach the message of Christ.
Baptism
Initiates new life in Christ, but is only the beginning of our lives as Christians.
Courage
Confirmation is the sacrament that gives people courage to do what they know is right, defend the truth, and profess their faith in Jesus.
Laying on of Hands (matter)
Confirmation finds its origin in the laying on of hands used by the Apostles to convey the Holy Spirit to the newly baptized.
Chrism
Perfumed oil used in the anointing during Confirmation to signify the 'seal' of the Holy Spirit.
Indelible Mark
An imprint on the soul that signifies the permanence of Confirmation, which can be received only once.
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Wisdom, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Understanding, Piety, Fear of the Lord.
Matter of Confirmation
Sacred Chrism (laying on of hands).
Form of Confirmation
Specific words spoken by the minister, typically 'Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.'
Minister of Confirmation
Bishop.
Confirmand
The individual receiving Confirmation who takes the name of a saint to represent new responsibilities.
Sponsor
Aides the confirmand in living their Christian responsibilities.
Kingly Role
Pray to understand one's vocation or offer to help out in the parish.
Priestly Role
Offer up the work of daily activities to God.
Prophetic Role
Embrace modesty to show chastity in action; be an example to others and speak to others about the faith.
Requirements for Confirmation
Must be baptized, have reached the age of reason (usually about seven years old), and have the intention to receive the Sacrament.
Effects of Confirmation
Baptismal grace is perfected, an indelible mark is imprinted on the soul, a person is rooted more deeply as a child of the Father, gifts of the Holy Spirit are perfected, and a person's bond with the Church is perfected.
