Define âionic bondingâ and provide THREE examples.
Referred to as the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Examples: NaCl, H2S, Fe2O3.
Define âcovalent bondingâ and provide THREE examples.
Referred to as the sharing of electron pairs between atoms (mostly between two non-metals). Examples: H2, O2, CH4.
Explain the difference(s) between ionic bonds and covalent bonds through description.
Ionic bonds are much stronger than covalent bonds. This is because the two oppositely charged ions during the ionic bonding process makes them attracted to each other, while during the process of covalent bonding two non-metals are sharing their electrons.
List the distinction(s) between ionic bonds and covalent bonds through dot-points.
Ionic
Stronger
Attraction between oppositely charged ions
Covalent
Weaker
Sharing of electrons
