Name the phases of the cell cycle

Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase

Prophase

Preparation: nuclear membrane and nuckeolis disappear, chromatin condenses into chromosomes, spindle apparatus forms/centrioles spread out, spindle fibers attatch to centromere

Metaphase

Middle: chromosomes aligns in middle of cell

Anaphase

Apart/away: sister chromatids are pulled apart and cell begins to lengthen

Telophase

Two new: chromosomes arrive at opposite ends of the cell, nucleoli reform, spindle apparatus falls apart

What should you look for when trying to identify which stage of mitosis a cell is in?

Condition and location of DNA

What is a chromosome?

Dense, tightly wound DNA that is seen in mitosis

What is chromatin?

Loosely wound, tangled DNA that is seen in interphase

What is apoptosis?

Programmed cell death
