advantages of a green bill
Before a bill is presented to parliament there will often have been consultation on the proposed changes to the law such as in green papers this allows the government to listen to what the public has to say on the bill and any specialised organisations
advantages of a Thorough process
the fact that the process is very thorough means that when the bill is passed it will have no flaws and not have to go through the process again this also ensures that all aspects of the law have been considered by the MPs the lengthy process also means that the bill is scrutinised properly
advantages of it being Democratic
law is made by elected representatives this means that making laws is democratic as there is an election every 5 years the electorate can get rid of any government if it has performed as the public has wanted and introduced promised law reforms
advantages of the house of lords
safety net - this means that if a law is too harsh or maybe isn't quite correct the house of lords can reject it and send it back the the commons to fix an issue or just scrutinise a bill again
advantages in an emergency
law can be debated and enacted quickly this was seen in 2020 by the coronavirus act it went through all the stages within a week
disadvantages to length of time
it takes a really long time for legislation to pass with one bill taking 14 months to reach royal assent this can clog up the parliament system of making laws meaning new laws cant be introduced until other ones are finished because of this sometimes private members bills just get left out or ignored
disadvantages to the Whip system
a person that makes sure MPs from the party that they whip for get the MPs to vote according to what the party wants and not necessarily what there conscience or what is in the constituents best interests this undermines legitimacy as they were voted to represent the people in their constituency
disadvantages to the role of the monarch
the monarch is not elected so therefore it is undemocratic as they sign royal assent off on every single legislation that goes out to make it go through
disadvantages to the house of lords
The house of lords is not elected they are selected by the current pm and are appointed there for life this undermines democracy
diadvantages to the government
The government is in control of the timetable therefore they often allow very little time for private members bills even if they are introduced they can easily be voted out as the government have a majority often these bills involve a moral issue such as the right to die the result is very few bills become law this is seen as unfair
disadvantages to parliamentary sovereignty
it is difficult to amend an act once it has already been through all the stages making it legislation; this happened with the dangerous dogs act. To fix a law you have to go through the parliamentary law making process all over again this takes a long time and clogs up parliament
