the seven foundations of mindfulness practice
non-judging, patience, beginner’s mind, trust, non-striving, acceptance, letting go
are to be cultivated consciously when you practice mindfulness
non-judging
people have a tendency to judge things as good or bad or neutral, when we do this it locks us into an automatic reaction
see yourself doing this, just let it happen and continue thinking
patience
accept the fact that sometimes things must unfold on their own time, intentionally remind ourselves that there is no need to be impatient with ourselves
beginner’s mind
a mind that is willing to see everything for the first time. no moment is the same as any other, this mind reminds us of this
trust
become more fully yourself, take responsibility for being yourself and learning to listen to your own being
non-striving
the only goal should be to be yourself, back off from striving for results and instead focus on seeing and accepting things
acceptance
seeing things as they actually are in the present, coming to terms with things as they are
letting go
let our experience be what it is, and practice observing it form moment to moment
stress reactivity
stressor triggering a stress reaction, accompained by an internalizing of the stress reaction, leading to inadequate or maladaptive attempts to keep things under control, leading to more stressors adn more reactiorns and a breakdown in health
responding to stress
responding with awareness, learning how to work with all our reactions so that we may be less controlled by them
focused attention (concentration) meditation
focus on a certain external stimulus, instruction: ”when you notice that your mind has wandered, gently bring it back to the object of attention”
open monitoring (mindfulness per se)
being receptive to whatever sound/stimulus is in the environment is most evident at a given moment, “notice whatever predominates your fiend of awareness, moment to moment”
loving-kindness/compassion
purpose is to plant seeds of goodwill towards ourselves and others, over and over, which eventually sprout into positive thoughts, emotions, adn behaviors
