South American Countries

later joined by claiming 100 fathom (600ft) or

200-meter (656 feet) isobath

4
New cards

many nations have no continental shelf

so these countries substituted a 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone off their shores, creating a zone similar to the extensive shelf regions of Russia, Canada and the United States

he Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was established

by the coastal LDCs that possessed no continental shelf. A philosophical departure contradicted the U.S. and President Truman’s claim over bottom resources, to “now” include any resources found within the water column, as well as exclusive rights to Surface Waters, as well.

Therefore, the EEZ allows

a 200 nautical mile jurisdiction claiming exclusive sovereignty over the seabed, subsoil, the water column and fish within it, as well as in some cases the surface of the sea and the air column above it.
