CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0001 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Why is there a need for an OS (Operating System)?
Controls interaction between hardware components (CPU, memory, storage, keyboard, mouse, and display)
A common platform for applications (windows programs)
Provides a human user interface to interact with the computer efficiently.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0002 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
What are some standard OS features?
File Management (add/, delete, rename)
Application support (memory management, swap file management)
Input/Output Support (Printers, keyboards, storage and USB drives)
Operating System configuration, security and management tools.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0003 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Microsoft Windows
Advantage: Major market presence with a user-friendly interface and compatibility with a wide range of applications. Large industrial support having a variety of software support options. Multiple versions including Windows Server, Windows 10, Windows 11 and future versions.
Disadvantage: The wide usage makes it a target for malware and security vulnerabilities. Large hardware support can create a challenging integration exercises.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0004 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Linux
Free open source Unix-compatible software system. (Unix-like but this is not Unix). Multiple distributions in which some are focused on specific tasks and functions or for general use (Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, Fedora)
Advantage: No Cost, free OS that works on variety of hardware and software configurations. Strong active user community support with regular updates and security patches.
Disadvantage: Limited support options, especially with laptops and gaming. Limited software compatibility compared to Windows.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0005 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Apple macOS
Desktop OS that only runs on Apple hardware
Advantage: Easy to use, extremely compatible and integrated with Apple ecosystem and software applications. Relatively fewer security concerns.
Disadvantage: Requires Apple hardware, less industry support than the PC platform, and higher initial hardware cost.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0006 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Chrome OS
A lightweight operating system designed by Google, primarily for use on Chromebooks. It is based on the Linux kernel and primarily uses the Google Chrome web browser as its user interface.
Most apps are web-based and rely on cloud storage, limiting functionality without internet access.
Advantage: Fast boot times, simple interface, and good security. Many different manufacturers, less expensive.
Disadvantage: Limited offline capabilities and software options compared to traditional OS.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0007 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Apple iPadOS
OS specific for iPad tablets, a variant of iPhones OS
Desktop Browser is Safari which is a different version from an iPhone. Second monitor via function known as Sidecar
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0008 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Apple iOS
Exclusive to Apple iPhones, based on Unix but unlike Linux, iOS is a closed source - no access to source code.
To develop applications for iOS, developers must use Apple's SDK (Software Developer’s Kit) via macOS and follow strict guidelines set by the App Store.
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0009 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Google Android
Maintained by a consortium of companies known as the OPEN HANDSET ALLIANCE, Android is an open-source operating system based on Linux.
Unlike Apple iOS and Apple OS limitation to apple devices, Google Android is supported in many different manufacturer devices
Android apps are developed on Windows, macOS and Linux with the Android SDK. Apps are available from Google Play and third-party sites (i.e., Amazon, Appstore)
CompTIA A+ 1202 (PM) Section 01.1-0010 Operating Systems - OS System Overview
Vendor-specific limitations
End-Of-Life: Different companies set their own end-of-life policies for their operating systems, determining when support and updates will cease, often leading to compatibility issues and security risks for users.
Updating: iOS, Android and Windows will self-check
and prompt for updates. Chrome OS will update automatically.
Compatibility: Some movies are cross compatible and can be shared between operating systems.
Incompatibility: Direct executable applications built for specific OS. Some data files cannot be moved. Web-based applications may run across different operating systems but can face performance issues or feature limitations.
