Aerobic
Organisms that require oxygen for their survival.
Facultative anaerobes
Organisms that can survive with or without oxygen, such as certain yeasts.
Mesophilic
Species that thrive at moderate temperatures.
Heterotrophs
Organisms that require organic carbon for growth and exhibit absorptive nutrition.
Saphrophytes
Organisms that feed on dead or decaying organic matter.
Parasites
Organisms that live on or in a host and obtain nutrients at the host's expense.
Haustoria
Specialized structures that allow parasites to invade host cells.
Ecto-mycorrhizas
Fungal structures that form a sheath around plant roots.
Endo-mycorrhizas
Fungal structures that penetrate the root cells of plants.
Hyphae
The typical eukaryotic structures of fungi, composed of long filaments.
Aseptate hyphae
Hyphae without cross walls, typically found in Chytridiomycetes and Zygomycetes.
Septate hyphae
Hyphae containing cross walls (septa) that separate compartments.
Dolipore septum
A barrel-like structure that allows the flow of protoplasts and contains a pore.
Chitin
A structural polysaccharide found in the cell walls of fungi.
Vesicles
Small membrane-bound structures that transport materials in cells.
Rhizomorphs
Thick, root-like strands that help fungi to transport water and nutrients.
Sclerotia
Small, rounded structures that serve as resting bodies for fungi.
Plectenchyma
Organized fungal tissues that can be classified as prosenchyma or pseudoparenchyma.
