Social Identity Theory
A theory that suggests part of a person's self-concept comes from their group memberships.
Self-Esteem Hypothesis
The idea that if a group is perceived positively, members of that group feel good about themselves.
Basking in Reflected Glory
Celebrating successes of one's ingroup and feeling personally involved in those successes.
Ingroup Favoritism
The tendency to view one’s own group more positively than outgroups.
Outgroup Derogation
The tendency to view members of a different group negatively.
Minimal Group Paradigm
A research method that demonstrates how arbitrary and meaningless group distinctions can still produce bias.
Relative Deprivation
A feeling of disadvantage compared to a relevant referent, leading to anger and resentment.
Realistic Conflict Theory
The idea that prejudice arises from perceived competition for limited resources between groups.
Discrimination
Behaving differently toward individuals based on their social group membership.
Blatant Discrimination
Obvious discriminatory behaviors or attitudes.
Subtle Discrimination
Less noticeable forms of discrimination that may not be intentional.
Implicit Bias
The unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect understanding, actions, and decisions.
Stereotype Threat
The fear of confirming negative stereotypes about one's group, which can lead to underperformance.
Systemic Racism
A system where institutions and individuals maintain power over a racial group deemed inferior.
E.g., Implicit/Explicit stereotypes
Implicit stereotypes are unconscious beliefs; explicit stereotypes are consciously held beliefs.
Ingroup empathy bias
The tendency to have more empathy for members of one's own group than for members of other groups.
Coping Interventions
Strategies designed to help individuals manage stress related to stereotype threat.
