What was the cost of building 2 rock groynes and cliff regrading in Mappleton, Holderness Coast?
£2.1 million to build two rock groynes and protect the cliffs via cliff regrading in 1991
What was the economic value of the entirety of Mappleton in the 1990s? (economic benefit of protecting it)
£650,000, so costs outweigh the benefits
What positives did the EIA for Chattogram highlight?
Was not an EIA due to small schemes, so instead used an Environmental Assessment and Review Framework (EARF)
Positives: Helping to alleviate poverty by 10% by generating income opportunities
- Adapting to climate change and reducing disaster risk, eg road flooding 5 days a year instead of 20
- Environmental enhancement such as the planting of trees.
What negatives did the Chattogram EARF highlight?
Negatives: Disturbance of people and natural habitats
(especially during construction and permenant removal of natural vegetation and the relocation of some households) (200 people) by road realignment.
What schemes were planned to be implemented in the project in Chattogram?
Improving road connections (for farmers and markets) while raising embankments to 60 cm above normal flood levels and making them resistant to coastal erosion.
-Creating new market areas with sheds raised on platforms above the expected 2050 sea level
- constructing, improving or extending 25 tropical cyclone shelters, taking account of sea level rise and higher wind speeds
-training in climate resilience and adaptation measures
Who funded the project in Chattogram
2015, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a UN agency btw, loaned the project $60 million (not in 2015 but they did rate the project)
Rated the project progress as satisfactory overall but with slow progress on road embankments.
Why does Easington’s (Holderness Coast) benefits outweigh the costs of protection?
· Population 2,200
· Easington gas terminal is located there, which is one of the 6 main gas terminals in the UK. Centrica won a contract to process gas here in 2018 worth £120M. It provides hundreds of jobs.
