First Aid
Initial assistance/support or treatment given to an injured or ill person before he/she reaches a health facility.
Preserve Life
A basic principle of first aid that involves preserving the life of the casualty and the rescuer.
Hazard
Any source of potential damage, harm, or adverse health effects on something or someone.
Biological Hazards
Biological substances that could cause harm to humans, such as bacteria, viruses, and insects.
Ergonomic Hazards
Physical factors that can result in musculoskeletal injuries, often due to poor workstation setup or repetitive movements.
Chemical Hazards
Hazardous substances that can cause harm, resulting in health impacts like skin irritation or respiratory issues.
Psychosocial Hazards
Hazards that can adversely affect an individual's mental health or wellbeing, such as stress or workplace violence.
Vital Signs
Measurements of the body's most basic functions, including body temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
Blood Pressure
The force of blood pushing against the artery walls, measured in systolic/diastolic (mm Hg).
Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
A neurological scale used to assess a patient's conscious state based on eye-opening, motor, and verbal responses.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Safety equipment for protecting emergency response workers from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
Infection Control Equipment
Basic protective equipment in first aid kits to reduce the risk of infection during emergency situations.
Wound Management Equipment
Supplies included in first aid kits to manage wounds of all sizes, such as bandages and tourniquets.
Tachycardia
An abnormally high heart rate, typically over 100 beats per minute.
Bradycardia
An abnormally low heart rate, below 60 beats per minute.
Respiration Rate
The number of breaths a person takes per minute, indicating respiratory function.
Abnormal Breathing
Includes conditions like tachypnea (over 20 breaths/min) or apnea (no breathing).
