• Geraldine Ferraro was Mondale’s running mate and was the first woman to appear on a presidential ticket.

Reagan won because of the “why go back 4 years” mentality.

• Meant to give consumers more money to invest and thus boost the economic growth and productivity … whilst lowering the power of the federal government.

• Wealth would trickle down overtime.

Led to huge unemployment rises in 1982 with folding businesses, failed banks, and a declining car industry.

A high tech missile device which can shoot missiles out the air to protect the US.
Seen as a way to deter the SU but wasn’t technologically possible.

The Chief Justice in 1986 who would lead a conservative court on issues like federalism and individual rights.

Sent troops there as a way to peacekeep but it didn’t work and instead 200 troops died in a suicide bombing. This led to captures which was then ultimately the cause to pull all troops.

This was given to Reagan as his nickname because nothing mean about him would stick to his skin.

An airstricked country which was heard to be part of a terrorist attack which killed an American serviceman.

The Sandinistas were communists in favor of the SU in Nicaragua. The US government was aiding the team opposing them —Contras— to prevent the uprising of communism in the country.

Iran Contra Scandal

US sold weapons to Iran —who was fighting Iraq and needed them— and also a promise to get lebanese hostages back.

This money was then sent to the Contras to fight off communism in Nicaragua

the president: If found guilty that shows breaking american law. If found innocent shows lack of control over his admin.

Cutting and/or NO taxes, strong defense policies, and toughness on crime and abortion which all make him just like Reagan and thus liked by everyone.

Dukakis was not as full of Ideas but the ones he did have were more social.

Jesse Jackson, governor of Mass. Was hoping to forge a coalition within the colored community.

With the end of the war, there was now no global enemy for the US to fight off.

Started by Reagan and continued under bush, this was the fight against drugs in both panama and on the border which aimed to reduce the illegal drug selling happening.

Criticisms of the War or Drugs?

Targeted minority countries as the ones to be selling drugs.

Rodney King

The man who ran from cops but then brutally beaten and the police officers weren’t given any punishment.

Changes in minorites?

Latinos were growing the fastest at the time.

Native americans were fighting for their land and even money.

Asian Americans were the second fastest growing minority group and had exceptional standard but high unemployment and poverty.

Immigration Trends?

Rise in immigration from Latino and Asian countries.

Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill.

Clarence Thomas was an African American man who was going to be placed straight on the Supreme Court bench from South Carolina.

Unfortunately, Anita Hill accused Thomas of sexully harassing her and thus a case was needed to be heard for him to join the bench. These hearings were aired on TV.

He won 52-48 and became the 2nd African american to be on the bench.
