Nationalism
The feeling of loyalty to a nation; it is something in one’s mind and abstract idea; the people who make up a nation feel that they have a common bond which unites them and sets them apart from other people

Common racial or ethnic group
The people belong to a group with common ancestors and common characteristics
Common language
The people usually speak the same language, makes it possible to develop literature, or write history, which all the people understand

Means that people share in the goals of achieving an end result

National myths
Shared stories, ideas and beliefs about a nation that may or may not be true
Language
A system of communication usually spoke or written that a group of people used to share ideas and interact
Ethnic
Relates to a group of people who share common ancestry, heritage or physical traits, often involves traditions, history, and shared experiences
Cultural
Refers to the shared customs, beliefs, arts, and way of life of a group of people often influences how people behave and celebrate life events
Religious/spiritual
Relates to beliefs practises and values concerning the divine the sacred or the meaning of life it often shapes, moral choices and community life
Geographic
Based on the place or region where a person lives or comes from, can influence lifestyle, culture, and identity
Citizenship
Refers to legal membership in a country which comes with rights responsibilities, and a sense of belonging to a nation
Nation
A group of people who are connected by a sense of belonging and acceptance, and who identify themselves as a nation
Nation State
A territory with internationally recognized boundaries and a politically organized body of people under a sovereign government
Ethnic nationalism
A form of nationalism where a nation is defined by shared ethnicity, ancestry, language, culture, or religion rather than by citizenship or laws
Civic nationalism
A form of nationalism based on shared political values laws and citizenship, where people belong to the nation by choosing to follow its principles, regardless of ethnicity or culture
National self-determination
The idea that a nation or people have the right to govern themselves and choose their own political status without outside control
Sovereignty
A nation’s right to self government and control over its own jurisdiction that is recognized by other nation
Patriotism
A feeling of pride, loyalty and love for one’s country, often shown through support for its values, traditions and institutions

Contending loyalties

People who support a system of government where power is shared between a central government and regional governments

A commitment or sense of attachment to something other than one’s nation, such as family, culture, religion, or community

To restore friendly relations or find a way to make conflicting ideas or groups compatible
Inflation
The general increase in prices overtime, which reduces the purchasing power of money
Segregation
The four separation of people based on characteristics, such as race, religion, or ethnicity
Alienation
The feeling of being isolated disconnected or excluded from others or society
