Race
a social construct based on physical qualities, one’s “race” is a group they have been placed in due to their shared physicalities that society determined go together
Ethnicity
a social category that people are placed in based on cultural traits they share such as language, dress, religion, etc. These traits are commonly more obvious to the eye
Culture
a set of shared learned beliefs, values and behaviors that influence one’s way of life and their identity. This way of life is typically shared in a community, whether that be family, friends, a club, a job, etc.
Racism
a negative set of beliefs/behaviors that either an individual or group holds against another group due to the race/ethnicity that they belong to, usually a minority group
Systemic Racism
policies/procedures that exist in an organization (political, economical and social systems) that result in and support unfair advantages/harmfulness to certain people based on race (such as literacy tests and taxes on immigrants in the U.S.)
Bias
opinions unfairly held in favor of or against a specific person, group or thing compared to another
Inequity
identifiable lack of fairness or justice (such as the racial wealth gap)
White Privilege
obvious societal advantages that a white person obtains simply due to their race, especially when otherwise completely the same as a nonwhite individual (such as the ability to easily see representation of oneself in the media and on store shelves)
