Structures of the Body, From smallest to largest:
Cells
Tissues
Organs
Body systems
The complete body
What are cells?
Cells are the basic structural and functional unit of the body
What can specialized cells group to form?
Specialized cells can group together to form tissues
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group or layer of similarly specialized cells that join together to perform specific functions
What are the four main types of tissues called?
The four main types of tissues include : Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, and Nerve.
What do those 4 types do?
Epithelial tissues are any tissues that form a surface, ex: skin, stomach, colon
Connective tissues connect any type of tissues together, keep things together
Muscle tissue of course are the muscles
Nerve tissue is the brain spinal cord and the nerves throughout the body
What is an organ? What are organs made up of?
A body organ is a somewhat independent part of the body that performs a specific function. Multiple tissue types make up and organ.
What’s a body system?
Multiple organs work together in a body system to combine their specific functions together
Name the 12 systems of the body and what they do
Skeletal System - bones, support & protection.
Muscular System - muscles, movement & heat.
Cardiovascular System - heart, blood vessels (transport).
Lymphatic System - defense against disease.
Immune System - also defense against disease.
Respiratory System - lungs (gas exchange).
Digestive System - breaks down food.
Urinary System - eliminates waste, regulates fluid balance.
Nervous System - brain, spinal cord, nerves (fast control).
Integumentary System - skin, protects body.
Endocrine System - hormones (slow control).
Reproductive Systems - produces offspring.
Bonus: Special Senses - Eyes, Ears, Nose, and Tongue
