• After railroad companies cut wages, workers went on strike

• Shut down more than 60% of railroads

• Violence broke out —> federal troops —> 100 dead

Pullman Strike

• Manufactured sleeping cars for trains near Chicago

Knights of Labor (1881)

• national union open to all (including women and black)

• aimed to take down monopolies but also eliminate child labor

• Fell apart after the Haymarket Square Riot in 1886 - peaceful protest for 8-hour workday, then a bomb exploded unrelated to them causing public disdain
