Sources
Sewage, agricultural waste, manure, food scraps and plant material
Crushing
The waste is crushed and mixed with water to form a slurry
Digestion
The slurry is placed in an anaerobic digestor, a sealed container, where the organic waste is broken down by anaerobic bacteria
Gases
The anaerobic bacteria produce methane and carbon dioxide. Other gases may also be present like hydrogen sulfide
Collection
The biogas is collected in gas storage chambers
Purification
The impurities like hydrogen sulphide can be removed through sodium hydroxide scrubbing to improve quality
Uses
The biogas can now be used for cooking and heating. The digest is used as organic fertilizer
Environmental impact
When the digest from the biogas production is irresponsibly disposed, it may end up in water bodies where it contaminates water and causes bad smell and diseases when people drink the water
Mitigation
This can be mitigated through proper disposal of this digest and using it as organic manure
