Millie:( enjoying the chaos) Hello, Gilmore. Come in.
Gilmore: I just happened to be across the street, and I- is Flory here?
Millie: Well, yes- ( realizes) -and no
Gilmore: What do you mean?
Millie: I mean, she’s here.
-
.. But she's busy.
Gilmore: Oh. Oh! Then I’ll just wait.
Millie: She's taking a bath.
Gilmore: ( insistent) I’m in no special hurry.
Millie : She's taking a bath!
Gilmore: Oh.
Millie : A beauty bath.
Gilmore: Readjusting his glasses Gee whiz!
Millie: So maybe you’d better go now
Gilmore: I just happened to be across the street and-
Millie: You said that before.
Gilmore: ( Remembers his reason for being here) I-I had something I wanted to say to Flory.
Millie : I’m her best and truest friend, so I can tell her.
Gilmore: (hiding something)This is rather personal.
Gilmore: I’ll write what I was going to say, and you can give her the note.
Millie: Okay. Sit right down there. (Points to dining table)
Gilmore: I see she brought home her algebra book.
Millie: Flory! It’s your mother. She’s home- right here-now!
Gilmore: It’s about algebra that I want to ask Flory.
Flory: Don’t tell her about- you know what. ( motions to vanity) Tell her we’re doing homework.
Millie nods and heads back to table
Gilmore: (still in his own world) Since I’m so good at algebra, I was thinking that if Flory-
Mrs. Patterson: Bring them right in here. The kitchen step hasn’t been fixed yet. The two
chuckle unaware of the children, after a moment, Mrs Patterson turns her attention to Millie and
Gilmore. Hello. Busy studying?
Gilmore: No
Mrs. Patterson: Oh! No wonder it’s so solemn in here. Where’s Flory?
Gilmore: She’s busy . Mille is fed up and kicks gilmore again
Mrs. Patterson: I don’t believe you’ve been here before, have you?
Gilmore: No, maam. I just came today because I happened to be across-
Mrs. Patterson: How do you do? I’m Flory’s mother.
Gilmore: ( standing) I know. I’ve followed you- I mean, I’ve seen you walking down the street
together.
Mrs. Patterson: I have them all wrapped, so it won’t take a minute. She goes to grab the
plants, and touches Mr. Peabody’s hand after a brief silence, she says I’ll get the containers.
She exits up left Mr. Peabody begins pacing and mumbling to himself
Gilmore: What?
Mr. Peabody: Nothing-nothing at all. Just talking to myself. A little habit you get when you live
alone. (pause) I have a son- about your age, too.
Gilmore: I’m fifteen. ( looks at Millie) Well, almost.
Millie: Aren’t you through yet so you can go?
Gilmore: I don’t know how to sign it.
Millie : with your name, silly.
Gilmore: I mean -
“yours truly” or “truly yours.“
Mr. Peabody: Going to be a great mathematician, eh? Pokes at Gilmore clearly making a joke,
when Gilmore doesn’t laugh, he may awkwardly clear his throat.
Gilmore: (deadpan) No
Millie : (fed up) goodbye, Gilmore. I’ll give her what you’ve written.
Gilmore: Well, I hope she can read it. I’m not very good at writing.
Mrs. Patterson: Here they are. And I do appreciate your helping me home. Hasn’t Flory come
down yet?
Gilmore: No. And I’m beginning to worry.
Mrs. Patterson: Do you have to leave?
Gilmore: Well, no-
Millie : goodbye, Gilmore. Ushers Gilmore to the door and sits on the couch to start homework
Gilmore: goodbye Exits
Flory: Why, Gilmore! Do come in…
Gilmore: I brought you the answers for tomorrow’s problems. They’re pretty hard this time.
Millie: If you excuse me. I have to
Gilmore: What's wrong with her?
Flory: I better go . Thanks for the algebra , and I’ll see you at school
Gilmore: do you have to go? ( suddenly confident) floor, it isn’t just algebra that I come by every
day for-
Flory: what do you mean?
Gilmore: Flory, would you go to the movie with me sometime?
Flory: yes!
Gilmore: Oh, Gee, you don’t know how important this is, because tonight I’m going to wear my
new long pants.
