Endocrine System
Responsible for coordinating specific activities of cells and tissues by releasing hormones into the body.
Endocrine Glands
Create and secrete hormones into the bloodstream.
Exocrine Glands
Create and secrete substances onto a surface like sweat, saliva, and oil.
Adrenal Glands
Located atop the kidneys, secrete epinephrine and norepinephrine to elevate blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar.
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
Hormones that help to elevate blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar. Secreted when the body is under stress.
Pineal Gland
Responsible for the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates the body's wake/sleep cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm.
Pituitary Gland
Secretes growth hormone, prolactin, and follicle-stimulating hormone.
Hypothalamus
Produces dopamine, which increases blood pressure and heart rate. Considered the reward center hormone.
Ovaries
Female gonads that create estrogen and progesterone.
Pancreatic Islets
Create glucagon (increases blood sugar) and insulin (decreases blood sugar).
Testes
Male gonads that secrete testosterone.
Thyroid
Produces calcitonin, which decreases the levels of calcium in the blood stream, preventing weakening of the bones and kidney stones.
