exothermic reaction
A reaction that gives out energy, causing an increase in temperature.
endothermic reaction
A reaction that takes in energy, causing a decrease in temperature.
energy level diagram
A graphical representation showing the energy changes during a chemical reaction.
oxidation reaction
A reaction involving the addition of oxygen to a substance, forming oxides.
acid
A substance with a pH less than 7 that donates protons (H+) in solution.
alkali
A soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
neutralisation
A reaction between an acid and a base producing salt and water.
combustion
A chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen, producing heat and light.
thermal decomposition
A reaction where a compound breaks down into simpler substances upon heating.
catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process.
