Goal is to capture each others capital, very close to each other

Once Calvary (South) came, the Infantry (North) took off and went running the other way

Doesn’t look good for the North, gives the South hope

Bloodiest single day of the war

22,000 killed or wounded

Lee retreats from Maryland

Battle of Fredericksburg

North attacks southern cities (attacked a city 3 times)

North loses, major victory for the south

Battle of Chancellorsville

Union outnumbered confederacy 2:1

Union loses, it’s demoralizing

Best Southern General, Stonewall dies here

Battle of Gettysburg

Lee v.s. Union General George Meade

Lee loses badly here

Turning point of the war, Union victory

Big win for the north, after 2 years the anaconda play starts to work

Battle of Vicksburg

Union wins

Union now controls the entire Mississippi River

Proves Grant is a good general

Sherman’s March to the sea

Taking the fight to the people, destroying railroads, crops, supplies

Mainly in Georgia, marched from Atlanta to Savannah, burnt Atlanta

Goal was to get south to give up, anaconda plan taking place

Where does Lee surrender

At Appomattox Court House in Virginia

Official end of the war
