Insomnia
A sleep complaint that occurs at least three times per week for at least three months and is associated with daytime impairment.
Acute Insomnia
Often develops in response to stressful life events; short-term sleep problems.
Chronic Insomnia
Persists over time, evolving from short-term sleep problems.
Idiopathic Insomnia
Not linked to other medical or psychiatric conditions.
Primary Insomnia
Results from another health or psychiatric condition, e.g., pain or depression.
Sleep-Onset Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep, characterized by long sleep latency.
Sleep-Maintenance Insomnia
Difficulty both falling and staying asleep.
Insomnia Severity Index (ISI)
A questionnaire with seven questions to assess sleep patterns and severity of insomnia.
Precipitating Factors
Stressful life events or triggers that initiate insomnia in vulnerable individuals.
Maladaptive Behaviors
Behaviors maintaining insomnia even after the initial trigger has resolved.
Neurobiologic Model
Explains how imbalances in brain circuits contribute to insomnia.
Hyperalgesia
Increased pain sensitivity caused by insufficient sleep.
Cognitive Model of Insomnia
Explains how negative beliefs about sleep perpetuate insomnia through a cycle of worry and arousal.
Bidirectional Relationship
The concept that insomnia and pain worsen each other over time.
Cyclic Sleep-Pain Trends
Poor sleep increases pain intensity, while pain disrupts sleep quality and continuity.
