What do cells use diffusion for?
Take in substances they need and get rid of waste products.
What is gas exchange?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide are transferred between cells and the environment.
What diffuses out of cells into blood plasma to the kidneys for removal out of the body?
Urea
What affects how easy it is for an organism to exchange substances with its environment?
Its surface area to volume ratio.
Why do multicellular organisms need exchange surfaces?
They have a smaller surface area compared to their volume so not enough substances can diffuse from their outside surface to supply their volume.
What adaptations do exchange surfaces have?
They have a thin membrane so that substances only have to travel a short distance to diffuse.
They have a large surface area so lots of a substance can diffuse at once.
In animals, they have lots of blood vessels, to get substances in and out of blood quickly.
Gas exchange surfaces in animals are often ventilated so that air can move in and out quickly.
