Peri-operative experience
The phases surrounding a surgical procedure: pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative.
Pre-operative phase
The period before a surgical procedure where patient assessment, risk identification, and preparation occur.
Intra-operative phase
The time frame in which surgery takes place, including preparations and monitoring during the procedure.
Post-operative phase
The period following surgery, focused on recovery, assessment, and management of complications.
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS)
Surgical techniques that require smaller incisions and typically lead to shorter recovery times.
Anesthesia
Medications used to prevent pain during surgery, which can be general, regional, or local.
Aldrete Score
A scoring system used to assess a patient's readiness for discharge from the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit).
Informed consent
A process ensuring that patients understand the risks and benefits of a surgical procedure prior to giving permission.
Common intra-operative complications
Complications that can occur during surgery, such as anaphylaxis and malignant hyperthermia.
Common post-operative complications
Complications that can arise after surgery, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and infections.
Interprofessional care
Collaborative approach among various healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for patients.
Patient assessment
The evaluation of a patient's condition, needs, and potential risks before, during, and after surgery.
